WHY WE LOVE WHAT WE DO
On the evening of New Year's Eve 1999 while many were celebrating, I was in a UW-Madison hospital room, holding my brother Timmy's hand as he passed away at 34 years of age...a piece of my heart died that night watching my Mom kiss her oldest son's forehead and telling him that it was okay to let go...watching my Dad, one of the strongest men I know, break down in tears...watching my oldest sister Lisa, 4 months pregnant with her first child, sobbing while my twin sister and I held his hand and I silently said the Lord's prayer for him. A few hours before the start of the new millennium, I was making one of the worst phone calls of my life...calling my brother Rob to let him know his only brother had passed away.
It was because of our immense loss and later the diagnose and passing of additional family members and close friends, that we decided to become involved in Relay For Life. Relay is the American Cancer Society's premier fundraising movement to end cancer. ACS saves lives by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back. We are very proud to support ACS in their mission as they support anyone affected by any type of cancer.
Most recently, my twin sister Sharie, was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. The work our family has done over the past 15+ years supporting the American Cancer Society is once again coming full-circle. While she has a battle ahead of her, we remain very positive and know she will beat this; as she says "it's just a bump (or lump) in the road". Early detection, advancement in treatment options and ACS patient programs and services all play a huge part in her diagnosis and journey ahead. We can't say it enough - get your yearly health screenings - it just might save your life!
*We are proud to announce that Sharie is officially cancer free!!!

OUR
HISTORY |
In the fall of 2013, a very dear friends of ours, Trudy, tragically lost her mother Dolly. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Trudy's husband, Will, is a cancer survivor. Through the IL chapter of the LLS, we discovered Alexis' Angels - a holiday gift-giving program for children cancer survivors run by Jim & Patty White. Jim & Patty had lost their daughter at a young age to blood cancer. We instantly knew this was how we wanted to honor Dolly. Dolly was a teacher for many years and enjoyed working with children. She was our Angel, guiding us to Jim & Patty. In 2014, we asked Jim & Patty to allow children with blood cancer in Kenosha County, WI be included in their program and we would help with that. In 2015, with Patty & Jim's blessing, we took their idea, tweaked it a bit and began Angels of Hope, serving families affected by all types of cancer in southeastern WI & northern IL.
We continue to Relay for Timmy & Sharie, organize Angels of Hope in remembrance of Dolly and fight back for all of our loved ones affected by cancer. We do this with the hope that one day no one will ever have to hear the words "you have cancer". - Susie, Pete, Lisa & Beth |
